Step 5: Verify Ventilation Math
- Code requires 1 square foot of net free vent area per 150 square feet of attic floor, or 1:300 with proper balance.
- Split intake and exhaust 50/50. A 2,000 sq ft attic needs roughly 6.7 sq ft NFA total, balanced.
- Ridge vent NFA averages 18 sq inches per linear foot. Soffit vents typically deliver 9 sq inches per linear foot.
- Imbalanced ventilation cuts cool roof effectiveness 15-25%. Confirm intake before crediting any reflectance number.
- Do not mix exhaust types. Combining ridge vents with powered attic fans or gable vents short circuits airflow and pulls conditioned air through ceiling penetrations.
Step 3: Match the System to Your Roof

A Word on Verifying Green Claims
Before you sign off on any green system, confirm the claims in writing rather than on a brochure. Ask for the documented reflectance or impact rating, the actual warranty term and what voids it, and confirmation that the installer is certified for the specific product if an enhanced warranty depends on it. Step 4: Specify the Underlayment Stack
- Ice and water shield: minimum 36 inches up slope from interior wall plane. Heather Knoll code follows IRC R905.1.2 for ice barrier in our climate zone.
- Synthetic underlayment over the field: 4 foot horizontal laps, 6-inch end laps, capped fasteners at 12 inches on center.
- Drip edge: 26-gauge minimum, lapped 2 inches at joints, installed under underlayment at eaves and over at rakes.
- For metal: high temperature ice and water shield rated to 240 degrees Fahrenheit. Standard membrane will fail under panel temperatures.
- Valley liner: 36-inch wide self adhered membrane centered on the valley before field underlayment laps over.
